Hey Friends,  We're all excited Judy and Mary Anne got all our beautiful paintings hung this morning in Abingdon..  Thanks a bunch ladies.

Travel Safely

PLEIN AIR IN THE YARD

Hey Friends,  I was motivated to get outside because the sun was shining, beautiful clouds were zipping through, and it was warm.  For the last couple of days it has been chilly and dark and drizzly.  In the middle of the night we had a thunder storm

Anyway, above is my obligatory painting of the spirea bush at top of driveway.  It has just barely started to bloom.  Usually it is in full display when the blue iris have opened.

And the clouds were rolling on.

So I got out a deep cradled panel to get some clouds before they disappear.

This is a mixture for the cloud shadows.

I have tried to make this pic upright but blogger seems to be stuck.  So I'll leave it.  This shows the initial placement of clouds.

And here I'm starting to refine a bit.  And somewhere along the line, I added some cows and a tree.

After this stage I added layers of the palest pink and palest yellow to the tops of the clouds.

Now I'll let it stay hidden for a few days and then look at again.  There may be changes necessary or maybe not.

the First LYNCHBURG PAINT OUT

Hey Friends,  Yesterday we (the DLP gals) got to paint and play at the Lynchburg Paint Out held at the Grave Garden (also City Cemetery)   The Lynchburg Art Club did a fantastic job with their very first such event.  Hoping to repeat next year.

The top painting is a fenced in plot with sweet roses and a trumpet vine and I moved the snowball bush from another plot.  This second shot was my first painting.  I loved the old tree with the spread wide arms and the mossy stones beneath.  This handsome tree was at the very top and had beautiful views.

This small study is the little plot you see in the distance.  I made the rose on the left a good bit bigger and added the iris blooming.

There were so many spots begging to be painted, you could probably stay there for a year.  I'm told the roses should be showing off in about 2 weeks, that would be mid May.  Would love to see the roses.  May have to attempt a trip back.

NEW ART HANGING AT PENNY LANE AND AN INVITATION TO THE CRITTER SHOW

Hey Friends,  We, the DLP's, hung new paintings at the new and fabulous, Penny Lane Gift Shop, on West Main St., Salem, Va.   Hope you can stop by soon.

2nd FRIDAY ART WALK AT GOOSE CREEK, BEDFORD, VA.

Hey Friends, I've been busy with a business class and almost forgot to post about Sally Koopman's beautiful show at the Goose Creek Gallery in DT Bedford, Va.

It opened this past Friday night and will be up thru sometime in April.

Don't know is you can see the red dots up top but I think 5 of them have found homes. I know she is super excited about that.

They had a pretty good sized crowd when I left.

GORGEOUS DAY IN THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS

Hey Friends, Are you enjoying this fantastic little teaser Mother Nature is giving us?!?

Maybe she even has an early spring in store for us, good little artists.

Still hoping you guys are coming to Bedford tomorrow night.  To the famous Goose Creek Gallery in DT Bedford.

CRITTER SHOW TO BE HUNG IN APRIL AT 2ND HELPINGS GALLERY IN ROANOKE

Hey Friends,  I think I'm almost finished with animals for the Critter Exhibit by DLP's.

We (the DLP's) also have a big exhibit going up 1st of May at the Arts Depot in Abingdon, Va.

The one above is painted on Masa Rice Paper that has powdered charcoal sprinkled on it first thing after the crackling and india ink bath.

The rice paper is adhered to a deep cradled board and the image created with acrylics.  The deep sides are painted black and it is all varnished.

Now how about a title ? ! ?

Anybody want to suggest a title?

How about- "Mom, what is it?"

I would welcome something not quite so lame.

Three Expressions

Hey Friends,  I'm hoping some of you will take the time to let me know what you think.

I went out a few weeks ago past Dixie Caverns on Rt. 11 and painted this 8x10 above.  It's pretty boring but thought maybe I could make it zippier if larger.

Here is a 2nd version.   My intention was a more abstract, impressionistic version.

I think it sucks, big time.

Here is the 3rd.  This one I like !  It has been whittled down to the very last blade of grass.

I don't know if this version is impressionism or expressionism.

I would really enjoy doing more of this, but also hoping I can do it in one GO !.  I don't want to do 3 versions of every landscape so this will take a long time to learn and become 2nd nature.

I also know myself well enough, to say this might be the end of it.

HA!  Hoping not.

What I want to know is what you think of this new path.  Maybe you even have some pointers to make this easier on me.

Out Collecting Reference Photos with the DLP today

Hi Friends, Today was a beautiful, sunny day, BLUE sky.  So the DLP and I took a little trip to gather some reference photos to work from for a big exhibit coming up soon at the Arts Depot in Abingdon, Va.

Top is at Claytor Lake State Park and this (above) is where we started at the Draper Mercantile.  I had never been here (I really need to get out of the house more) and it is a really nice place with great food.  And they have live music on Friday nights and PIE !!

And here is a closeup of me and a couple tools and a cradled panel.  Getting ready to start slinging some paint for this show coming up !!

I will keep you posted so you don't miss it.

MOM'S ATTENTION

Process Shots for "the FLOWER VENDOR"

Hey Friends,  Every now and then I remember to take photos as I work on a new piece.  This is the beginning of the bright collage I made for the WILD THINGS show in Bedford, Va.

It starts on a cradled panel made by Bud Shaw from Bedford.

Here I'm painting the sides with black gesso.  And yes, when I finished I had to go back over it with black.

Here is the first step of putting the collage papers down.  I had scribbled with a permanent marker on the Hen's shape first.

Then I painted on the green grass and used the palette knife to make the flower stems.

Already painted the flower shapes here.  And now I'm rubbing miceous iron onto the hen.

Here I've added details, such as the lines on the flowers and the feather lines.

I decided I didn't like the dullness of the Hen and went back with white acrylic and Liquitex markers.

I enjoyed this process but I also find it just a bit frustrating thus I don't make too many of them.

Another difficulty is a title.  Not just for the collages but any painting.  Originally I was gonna call her "the Happy Gardener" then the "Flower Gardener" but finally thought of "the Flower Vendor".

I enjoy posting these process photos and hope you like to see some of the back ground work, instead of the finished product every time.  Of course during a challenge such as in January's posts, there isn't enough time for me to take photos.

Reception Today in Altavista

Hey Friends,  The challenge is over !! so maybe I will not post every day for a while !

But I wanted to let you know what a grand time we had in Altavista, Va. today at the YMCA.  The photo above shows Tim Dalton taking photos for the local newspaper.  We were treated royally and it was very appreciated.  They even had special rose baskets for each of us to take home. 

Lots of people came out to talk art with us so the time just flew by.

We laughed and enjoyed every minute.

Leslie Saeta's 30 in 30 Challenge - This is DAY 30 !!

Hey Friends,  This is IT  ! ! !  Last Day of Leslie's challenge.

I went out to my studio and found another flower painting, I had finished before winter set in.

I know that's cheating but like I said yesterday, my Sweetie Pie's are here and I don't want to fool with paint when we are all closed up in the house.

And this is what happens when you let them have paint.

And they were outside when they painted these beauties.

Anyway, that's why I decided it was OK to cheat once.

30 in 30 - Day 26 ---------- and YOU ARE INVITED

Hey Friends,  Here is one of the Glad paintings I mentioned in yesterdays post.  This is painted on a 3/4" wrapped canvas 16" x 12".  It is varnished and ready to hang.

And I'm inviting you to come to Altavista, Va. this Sunday. Jan. 31st. from 2 to 4 pm at the YMCA.

This is a lovely place to hang art work.  They have a hanging system and lots of light and room.

Their staff is so warm and helpful and I heard they put on quite the festive reception.

This is a great excuse to get out of your snowed in condition.  The roads have been cleared and you will not have to drive home in the dark.!

30 in 30 - Day 25

Hey Friends,  More Flowers.  You just don't realize, starting out, what it takes to do 30 paintings of the same subject.  I think I'm gonna mix it up a bit and paint something larger.

I had some pretty glads over the summer and took photos of them in various vases because I knew they were not going to last long.  So I think I will do them next.

Leslie Saeta's 30 day Challenge - Day 24

Hey Friends,  I suppose most of you know that Virginia got a good dusting of Snow this weekend.  I've been holed up painting and eating like a mad woman.  Happy with the art work so far but I forgot to buy ice cream before the flurry HIT !

It's a good thing really.  I've been eating pretty healthy.  

The small painting pictured here is in my ETSY SHOP.  I painted it with a palette knife and I must say I really like working with a knife.  You can make a lot of texture and of course it keeps you loose.  Everything I've painted the last few days was done with knives.
